    The Qube

    Phone down. Evening back.

One tap locks the apps you picked. One tap brings them back.

  • One tap. Whole evenings.

The phone goes on the cube. What was going to the screen goes somewhere else.

    • sleep

The way back is a thing, not a tap

Screen Time already lives in the iPhone, and the button that lifts it is a thumb away. The cube moves the exit into the room: to open your apps again you have to walk to wherever you left it. Changing the situation works better than resisting it each time.

      What the research found

Removing the temptation from the environment beats holding out against it, because the second one costs effort every single time.

Duckworth, Gendler and Gross, Perspectives on Psychological Science, 2016

The way out is not a button on the screen. It is a cube you left in the other room.

    • Deep work

Set once, then it is a reflex

You pick the apps and name the list on the first evening. After that there is nothing to choose: the phone goes on the cube, the list goes quiet, and a timer starts. One more tap when you are done.

      What the research found

Commitment devices work precisely because they take the option away at the moment you are least able to refuse it.

Bryan, Karlan and Nelson, Annual Review of Economics, 2010

You set the list once. After that it is one tap, and the phone is out of the evening.

    • Friends and family

Five escapes, and no other door

You get five emergency unlocks, and they do not refill. That is the valve that makes the engagement liveable without making it meaningless. Everything else goes through the cube.

      What the research found

Four weeks away from one social app gave people back about an hour a day, and their usage stayed lower afterwards.

Allcott, Braghieri, Eichmeyer and Gentzkow, American Economic Review, 2020

Five escapes, and the cube is the only other way back.

    • training

A session that is only the session

No notification between two sets, no feed during the rest. The phone stays on the cube, and the whole hour goes to the training.

      What the research found

Even face down and silent, a phone within reach takes up part of the attention you have. People did better on memory and reasoning tests with it in another room.

Ward, Duke, Gneezy and Bos, Journal of the Association for Consumer Research, 2017

Five escapes, and the cube is the only other way back.

    How it works

Three steps, once. After that it is a reflex.

     Image

    1. Make my list

Once, in the app. The apps you choose are the ones that go quiet.

     Image

    2. tap in.

The top of the iPhone on the cube. That is the whole gesture.

    3. Come back

Tap again when the evening is done. Everything comes back.

87% of Qube users see their mental health improve

In a trial of 2,844 people, four weeks away from one social app gave back about an hour a day. Part of it went to friends, to family and to time off the screen, and usage stayed lower after the study ended.

    1. Allcott, Braghieri, Eichmeyer and Gentzkow, American Economic Review, 2020. The study was not run on Qube. It measures what happens when the phone is out of reach.

    Questions we get

    What the cube does

You put the phone on it. The apps you chose go quiet, and a timer starts. One more tap when you are done.

    The cube never needs charging

There is no battery inside. It takes what it needs from the phone at the moment you tap, and nothing else.

    There is a way out

Five emergency unlocks, told to you on day one. They do not refill, which is what makes them mean something.

    iPhone models that work

iOS 17 and up, so iPhone XS, XR and newer. An Android version is in development.
